Great review. I definitely appreciate everyone who puts out revies like this. I have been using Field Notes for about 6 months now-always purchasing the grid 3 pack in basic brown. I loved them so much I decided to splurge and subscribe to the colors editions. I cracked one open and sure enough, there was massive bleed through. I went back to my basic brown with the same pen-not as much bleed through. I love the styling of the FN over Moleskin, but MS doesn't give me bleed like the FN brand. I am sad because I just blew $130 for a subscription and will probably be disappointed by the bleed in all the colors. or maybe I will luck out and get a good batch of paper for my future colors notebooks.

While I appreciate your experiences, it's pretty obvious that mine differ. I don't think you can argue with pictures and experience such as the one I documented.

I will agree that none of the notebooks react the same to a fountain pen and that perhaps you can find 3 in a pack that all work, but I'd say that would make you pretty lucky.

I'm always nonplussed by descriptions such as yours because my experience is so different. I've used Field Notes with lots of different pen/ink combinations, and have had very little bleed-through and no feathering at all. So, what to make of that? I don't know. I just continue to use them and suggest, like one poster on FPN said, that folks will try a 3 pack and see how it works for them. If they like them, good; if they don't, ah well.

That being said, I have recently settled into using them more with a pencil than a pen. I found some pocket-clips that slide onto a pencil (such as the ones Field Notes includes with most orders.) This makes them handy for pocket carry. ( http://www.pencilthings.com/ ) Or, I often carry a matching fountain pen/mechanical pencil combination. Whichever, I like using pencils, they somehow seem more appropriate for scribbling the quick note in my Field Notes, and of course no problems with bleed-through or feathering ever.

I'm a little torn about this interview after letting it sit here for a few days, I don't want to turn anyone away from Field Notes, they're great little notebooks but there's definitely some inconsistency in their paper.

They're nice little notebooks though, I'll find a use for them that doesn't include fountain pens. :)

Nice review. I thought I'd heard Field Notes were more FP friendly than Moleskine but I guess not!

Great review! I've used the regular Field Notes for quite awhile and not experienced much in the way of feathering or bleed-through; I wonder if the colour editions have the same exact paper. Or maybe it's due to my Safari being an EF nib. I'll be curious to test once mine get here.

And I have a pile of the pencils - if you'd like a few, email me with your address and I'll pop some into the mail!
